Mamamures

Maramures . Located in northwestern Romania, on the border with Ukraine, Maramures is the place where ancient art traditions, a land rich in folklore, with idyllic landscapes and a traditionally rural lifestyle, are preserved as nowhere else in the country .

The wooden churches of Maramureș were built during the 17th and 18th centuries, they are a selection of eight examples of different architectural solutions from different periods and areas. They are Orthodox churches in Maramureş County, Bârsana, Budesti, Desesti, Ieud, Sisesti, Poienile Izei and Târgu districts. They are tall wooden constructions with characteristic thin and tall bell towers at the western end of the buildings. They are a type of popular architecture very typical of the cultural landscape of this mountainous area in northern Romania.

Some of them have been included by UNESCO within the World Heritage  Site in 1999, for their religious architecture and wooden construction traditions.

The main tourist destinations are:

  • The „Merry Cemetery” of Sapanta
  • The Orthodox Monastery of Barsana
  • Wood architecture
