Brasov

Brasov (in Latin: Corona on the old maps was also called Cron∫tadt or Braßov, and between 1950 and 1960 it was called The Stalin city ) is the capital and most populous city of the Brasov district. He was awarded the title of city-martyr, for the participation of its citizens in the Romanian Revolution of 1989. According to the 2002 census, it has 283,901 inhabitants. The winter station Poiana Braşov is 12 km from the center of the municipality, with an infrastructure developed for the practice of winter sports. The patron saint of the city is the Virgin Mary. His statue is on top of one of the buttresses of the Black Church, which is oriented towards Casa Sfatului (the Council House, former town hall, now a history museum in the central square of the city), with the Brașov shield carved below, in relief. The Brașov municipality was through the centuries one of the most important, powerful and flourishing cities in its region. Thanks to its geographical position and its infrastructure, it allows the development of many economic and cultural activities. The current Romanian and Hungarian appellants derive from the Slavic word, barasu , which means strength. The German name, Kronstadt means „Crown City” and is reflected in the shield of the city, as well as in the medieval Latin denomination of „Corona”. Between 1950 and 1960, the city was called Orașul Stalin (in Romanian, the city of Stalin ), in honor of Iósif Stalin  .
